Your Georgia hardship license expires in 6 months, but your DDS suspension doesn't end for another year. Here's what renews when, and what you pay twice.

Georgia Hardship Licenses Expire on Their Own Calendar, Not Your Suspension End Date

Georgia issues hardship licenses (called Limited Driving Permits or LDPs under O.C.G.A. § 40-5-64) for a maximum of 12 months at a time. If your underlying DUI suspension runs 18 months or longer, your hardship license will expire mid-suspension. You must renew the hardship license separately from your full license reinstatement, and the two processes carry different fees, different timelines, and different SR-22 filing requirements. The hardship license renewal is not automatic. Georgia DDS sends no reminder. The expiration date appears on the front of your physical hardship license card. Drive one day past that expiration and you're operating under a suspended license again — which terminates your hardship privilege and can extend your underlying suspension by 6 months under O.C.G.A. § 40-5-63. You pay the $25 Limited Permit fee again at renewal. If your SR-22 filing lapsed or your carrier non-renewed your policy between issuance and renewal, you must refile SR-22 and show proof before DDS will renew the hardship license. Compliance resets, not just the card.

What You Must Provide to Renew a Georgia Hardship License Before Reinstatement

Georgia DDS requires continuous SR-22 coverage for the entire hardship license period. At renewal, you must submit a new DDS Form 19 (Limited Driving Permit Application), current SR-22 certificate showing active filing, proof of enrollment or completion in your DUI Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction Program if required by your original hardship order, and payment for the $25 renewal fee. If your employer changed since your original hardship approval, you must submit updated employer verification on company letterhead. If you installed an Ignition Interlock Device as a condition of your hardship license, DDS requires an IID compliance report from your provider covering the period since your last issuance. Any failed start attempts, circumvention flags, or missed calibration appointments can result in hardship renewal denial even if your suspension period hasn't ended. You apply for renewal at your county DDS Customer Service Center in person. Georgia does not accept online or mail renewals for hardship licenses. Bring your current hardship license card, your SR-22 certificate dated within 30 days, and all compliance documentation. Processing takes 1-2 business days if all documents are in order.

Why Georgia Hardship Renewals Cost More Than Drivers Expect

The $25 DDS permit fee is the visible cost. The hidden cost is SR-22 premium recalculation. Non-standard carriers (Bristol West, Direct Auto, Dairyland, GAINSCO) typically write hardship license SR-22 policies on 6-month terms. Your first policy covered months 1-6 of your hardship period. At renewal, you're now 12-18 months post-DUI, and your risk tier may have shifted based on claim history, payment history, or additional violations. If you had a clean hardship period — no violations, no IID failures, no lapses — some carriers reduce your SR-22 premium 10-15% at the 12-month mark. If you had any compliance issues, expect a 15-30% increase. One failed IID start in month 8 can reclassify you from monitored high-risk to severe high-risk, which triggers the higher tier. Budget $800-$1,400 for the next 6-month SR-22 policy term at hardship renewal if you had a clean period. If you had compliance issues, budget $1,200-$2,000. The $25 permit fee is administrative noise compared to the SR-22 premium adjustment.

How Hardship Renewal Interacts With Your Full License Reinstatement Timeline

Your hardship license renewal does not shorten your underlying suspension. If you were suspended for 18 months starting January 1, 2024, your suspension ends June 30, 2025. If you received a hardship license on March 1, 2024, that hardship expires March 1, 2025 — four months before your suspension ends. You renew the hardship in late February 2025, pay the $25 fee and updated SR-22 premium, and drive under hardship rules until June 30, 2025. On July 1, 2025, you apply for full license reinstatement. Georgia DDS requires a separate $210 reinstatement fee, proof of continuous SR-22 filing for the entire suspension period, Risk Reduction Program certificate, and payment of all outstanding citations or child support arrears. You've now paid $25 twice for hardship permits plus $210 for reinstatement — $260 in DDS fees alone, separate from SR-22 insurance costs. Some drivers assume the hardship renewal fee credits toward reinstatement. It does not. These are separate administrative actions under separate code sections. Hardship issuance and renewal fall under O.C.G.A. § 40-5-64. Full reinstatement falls under O.C.G.A. § 40-5-58. No fee transfers between them.

What Happens If You Miss Your Georgia Hardship Renewal Deadline

Georgia grants no grace period for expired hardship licenses. The expiration date on your card is the last day you may legally drive under hardship privileges. Drive on day one past expiration and you're operating under suspension, which is a separate misdemeanor charge under O.C.G.A. § 40-5-121 carrying up to 12 months in jail and a $1,000 fine for a first offense. If your hardship license expires mid-suspension and you do not renew it, you lose the privilege entirely. You cannot retroactively renew an expired hardship license. You must reapply from the beginning: new DDS Form 19, new $25 fee, new proof of hardship necessity, and a new DDS review of your compliance history since the original issuance. If you had any violations or IID failures during the expired hardship period, DDS may deny the new application outright. Set a calendar alert 45 days before your hardship expiration date. Gather your renewal documents 30 days out. Submit your renewal application no later than 15 days before expiration to account for DDS processing time and any document corrections needed. This is not a deadline you can fix after the fact.

How SR-22 Filing Duration Extends Past Your Hardship Period in Georgia

Georgia requires 3 years of SR-22 filing post-DUI, measured from your conviction date. If you were convicted on January 15, 2024, your SR-22 requirement runs through January 14, 2027. Your 12-month suspension ends January 14, 2025. Your hardship license, if issued March 1, 2024, expires March 1, 2025, renews through March 1, 2026, then you reinstate your full license in January 2025 — but you must maintain SR-22 until January 2027, two full years after your suspension ends. Most Georgia drivers don't realize the SR-22 clock and the suspension clock are independent. Your hardship license renewal at month 12 requires active SR-22. Your full license reinstatement at month 18 requires active SR-22. And you must keep that SR-22 active until month 36 even though you've been driving unrestricted since month 18. If your SR-22 lapses at any point during the 3-year filing period — even one day — Georgia DDS suspends your license again, and you start the hardship/reinstatement process over. One lapse in month 30, six months before your SR-22 requirement ends, resets your compliance clock to zero. Carriers know this and some require 6-month automatic renewal billing to prevent accidental lapses.
